IMDB Synopsis
A Group of young offenders doing community service get struck by lightning during a storm, and begin to develop superpowers.
I love the energy of this show. Filmed more like a music video then a television show, every shot is artistic and fun. The music is used so perfectly in Misfits and never feels out of place or intrusive (it's like the opposite of Grey's Anatomy, music wise)
A Mix of Comedy, Thrasher, Mystery, Soft Core Porn, Drama, Sci-Fi... Misfits never slows down. We're introduced to time travel, mind reading, and invisibility very early on, but the show doesn't over glorify this. Instead the appropriately named 'Misfits' focuses on the character's growing friendships and personal semi-real world struggles (drenched in vulgar, mature comedy). Not focusing on the superpowers may sound like a negative on paper,, but believe me, it's for the best.
Season 1 does an amazing job setting up the characters as we learn about the gang's troubled past, while they discover and struggle with their new gifts.
Simon and Nathan quickly take the lead as the series' more compelling characters. Simon being the dark quiet type, introvert, while Nathan is the clown who never shuts up, and seems to attract a love/hate relationship from everyone he meets. The two characters complement each other very well and provide the "odd couple" dynamic that drives the show. The supporting cast, however, holds their own and never seem to be outdone, or become irrelevant. All of our leads are extremely interesting. The presentation, dialogue and performances are all as tight as we've come to expect from the likes of Game Of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire. Don't expect that level of sophistication though. Misfits stands alone.
The local Community Center provides the characters with a vast array of different settings all in tight proximity which help with the narration and allows viewers a bit of awareness of how everything's going down geographically. The roof, the courtyard, the parking garage, the locker room, the pool, the gym, the waterfront... We can keep revisiting these settings, alter the lighting a bit for dramatic or horror effect and it feels brand new again.
Season 1 had me completely invested in an over-arching story. I ended up binge watching Season 1 (I needed to know what was going to happen next). For better or worse, Season 2 slows down a bit, lets the main characters breathe, allows the writers to experiment with some superpowers and get really creative with the writing. A great example of this is in S02E04, when our Misfits are met with a villain who's trapped in a real life game of GTA. The kind of stories we would never see outside of, maybe, an episode of Community (RIP).
I've heard that Misfits gets turned on its side going into Season 3. I have high hopes the energy will carry over for a few more seasons!
Misfits, Seasons 1 & 2 are a great watch! I would say a MUST watch for any All Range Mode Podcast listeners. Don't expect the seriousness of 'House of Cards' or the laughs of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'.
It's a 4.5/5 from me!
Misfits Seasons 01-04 are available on Danflix.
